This is all about how concern with the environment is balanced with the greatest possible comfort of guest.

replenishment

When you come to Quince Cottage I want you to leave feeling replenished and a little bit spoiled by the carefully selected products I provide for you, the food and the comfort you experience.  I also want you to feel uplifted by the beauty and tranquility of the house, street and Bradford on Avon and all it has to offer.  Finally, I want to give you the peace of mind that this has been achieved with minimal impact on the environment.

Even the Sunday Telegraph reported that 'our beds were the devil incarnate in terms of the environment'.

Whilst not 'deep green' I have done my best to consider the impact on the environment when setting the Bed and Breakfast up.

in the bedroom

Sold by a local company, the magnetic fleece mattress toppers are produced in New Zealand.  They are all about deep sleep and comfort of the guests.  However, bamboo textiles, which the sheets, duvet cover, and two of your pillow cases are made of, is one of the most environmentally kind products available.   The silk for the top pillow cases is one of the best quality and density I could find and is not produced using chemicals.  Silk is very, very good for your skin, both because it doesn't absorb moisture and because it is anti-wrinkle, so you shouldn't wake up with a 'bed face'!.  Silk benefits hair too.  The herb aromatherapeutic pillow pouches are to aid deep sleep.   The goose down and kapok is also organic and the cotton, padded pillow casing to stop the feathers escaping is also organic, and extremely comfortable.

in the bathroom

In the bathroom, green or not, the aim is that the products are lovely and make you feel gorgeous - they are in dispensers to avoid waste - better for the environment and it allows me to afford better quality products.  Most are organic or very natural but obviously not Fenjal bath creme, which is a little bit of luxury.  Syrian soap is provided for the bath and is made using  a 2000 year-old recipe.  It is extremely luxurious with natural oils, including lavender and sandalwood - a good unisex combination.  The only other ingredients are a sea salt saponifier and dionised water.  It leaves your skin clean, incredibly soft and smelling beautiful (which also induces calmness).  Unfortunately, it is hard to obtain in the UK but I hope to find a way around that going forward.  Also in the bathroom, the towels and bathrobes are mainly bamboo and the cotton tips and cotton wool is organic.

breakfast

For breakfast, most of what you have will be organic and/or local.  Again, I am always looking for ways to increase organic content, while  maintaining high quality.  The organic, maple cornflakes reflect this and are delicious.  If anything, the fruit from the shop at the end of the road aren't organic, but then I didn't pollute the air by getting in my car to go buy them.  On the other hand, if you get plums from my trees, they will be organic.  Whatever, the food must be fresh and delicious.

cleaning products

In general the cleaning products are organic, which are gentler on your skin.   However, I might revert to the occasional non-organic products if necessary to deal with particularly stubborn cleaning issues, subject to finding the organic equivalents.

comfortably green

So, I make every effort to be as green as possible, while at the same time making my guests as comfortable as possible.  I do this by sourcing organic bedding and towels, recycling (silk velvet pillow on the bed was 'refurbished', and I made the bedspread out of fabric I already had) or balancing the organic verses food miles (I try to achieve both where I can).

Whatever, where I haven't been able to find sufficient quality with green products, I will continue to seek these out and welcome suggestions.

Guests will soon be able to get a list of products sources, so if you like what you try and experience you should be able to buy them yourself.
